Systemic Link

Did you know?

Here are some interesting and sobering facts concerning periodontal disease:

Both gum infection (gingivitis) and gum and bone infection (periodontitis) are associated with promoting carotid and coronary artery disease and respiratory tract infections, as well as insulin resistance, diabetes, Alzheimer's, and dementia.

Inflammatory sites associated with periodontal disease are the triggers for these systemic connections. The mechanisms that promote carotid and coronary artery disease and diabetes are fairly well understood. There is yet to be enough evidence-based information relative to Alzheimer's & dementia to fully understand this phenomenon.

Likewise in a recent study involving 568 patients, those with periodontitis were three times more likely to experience COVID-19 complications that included either assisted ventilation, ICU admissions, or death.

Many of us have genetic and other risk factors, so no need to add to those unnecessarily. Keep your mouth free of periodontal disease with good daily care and frequent professional maintenance.
